Why Vespasian?

“As long as the Coliseum stands, Rome shall stand.” Saint Venerable Bede

You may be wondering “Why Vespasian Technology?”. To begin answering that question, we’ll need a brief history lesson.

The Roman Emperor Vespasian commissioned the construction of the Flavian Amphitheatre, now known as the Colosseum, in 70 AD. Construction began in 72 AD, and ended in 80 AD under his son’s reign, Titus.

The Colosseum has stood for over 1,900 years and is one of the greatest technological marvels of the ancient world and, indeed, even the modern one. It started out as an arena for gladiator contests, mock battles, dramas, and even animal hunts. It hosted up to an estimated 80,000 people at its peak.

Later on, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and Rome’s subsequent changes of hands, the Colosseum endured the test of time - hosting a chapel, a cemetery, various housing, workshops, even becoming a castle for a prominent Italian family as time passed into the Medieval Age.

It was hit with an earthquake in 1349 AD, and caused some collapse of the outer structure. Though some of the stone was re-used to build other buildings in Rome, the overall structure still stood, and continued to be inhabited as the centuries drove on.

Eventually, the Vatican and Italian/Roman Government endorsed a more sacred role for the site, and over time, the overall structure was restored. Today, it has become a popular tourist attraction - it has even resumed its original role of an event venue, albeit in a limited capacity.

Though history, and people, have changed, this building and this technology has endured. I (Travis) have stood in this marvel of engineering, architecture, symbolism and enduring legacy, and being there has remained a source of inspiration to this day.

We named our company Vespasian because we want to help companies build their technology infrastructure that stands the test of time like the Colosseum has. In this day and age, one of the biggest contributors to any company’s success is the state of their technology - having a computer functioning properly or a software optimized can mean the difference between making profits and shutting down, from solving your customer’s problems to shutting your doors. It might sound a bit drastic, but we’ve seen it all before.

Speaking of seeing it all before - the other purpose of this article is to introduce our blog - we’ll be covering everything in this portion of our site, including tech tips, tech stories from the past, emerging technologies we’re keeping an eye on, and ways to optimize your technology so you can focus on growing your business.

So, let’s get in touch today, and help you build your technology infrastructure so that your company, like the Colosseum, endures.
